7 things nobody tells you about the bar in your shower
We've hand-poured 100,000+ bars of goat's-milk soap. Here's what we learned.
Check the package of the bar you use. If it says "beauty bar," "body bar," or "cleansing bar," that's because in the US a product can only be labeled soap if it actually is one — made from oils and lye. Most bars on the shelf are pressed blocks of synthetic detergent: the same family of chemistry that degreases dishes, softened and perfumed.
Try it tonight: the word "soap" is weirdly hard to find in the soap aisle.
Detergent has one job: strip oil. It doesn't distinguish between the grease on a dish and the thin layer of oil your skin produces to protect itself — it takes both, twice a day. That tight, squeaky feeling after a shower isn't "clean." It's stripped.
Making soap naturally creates glycerin, the ingredient that draws moisture to your skin. It's valuable, so large manufacturers commonly separate it out and sell it on for use in other products — including lotion. The bar gets harsher; the fix gets sold separately. Handmade cold-process soap keeps the glycerin in the bar, because taking it out is an industrial step, not a soap-making one.
If you keep lotion in the car, by the bed, and at the kitchen sink, ask what's creating the demand. Strip your skin's oil twice a day and it will feel dry every day — no matter how much you put back afterward. Fix the cause and the lotion habit shrinks on its own. The most common message we get from customers is a version of: "I thought I just had dry skin."
