The checklist

Is your bar actually soap?

Every bar in the store answers these six questions somewhere on its label — most just hope you never ask. Here's how the three kinds of bars stack up, and how to grade whatever's in your shower right now.

The drugstore "beauty bar"the $1–2 bar next to the shampoo The big-brand "natural" barthe $8–10 bar with the masculine ads Tyme goat's-milk bar$7.99 · $6 in a six-pack
Legally allowed to be labeled "soap" Usually not — it's synthetic detergent Often yes Yes — oils + lye, the old way
Glycerin kept in the bar Commonly removed in manufacturing Varies by brand Always — cold process keeps it
Made with fresh milk (cream ≈ 25%) No No — most use water Fresh milk from our own herd
Cured for weeks before sale No — pressed and shipped Rarely disclosed Yes — weeks on the rack
Made by Global factory Contract manufacturers Our family, by hand, in Idaho
Cost per shower* ~5–10¢, plus the lotion after ~30–40¢ ~20–26¢ · lotion mostly optional
*Assumes roughly a month of daily showers per cured bar; softer uncured bars dissolve faster. Category columns describe how these product types are typically made — check any specific brand's label against the checklist. That's what it's for.

Row three, demonstrated: a quarter-cream lather.

How to grade any bar in 30 seconds

1. Find the word "soap" on the package. Missing? It's detergent — legally it can't say soap.

2. Look for glycerin in the ingredients. In handmade soap it's there because it never left. In factory bars it's often added back in small amounts — or absent.

3. Ask what the liquid in the recipe was. Water is cheap. Milk is a quarter cream — and you can feel the difference in the first lather.
